BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
We are so excited to have our families visit for Back to School Night tonight! To best serve your needs, we are utilizing a new Back to School Night format. All families should report to the gym by 6:00 pm. After the group presentation, families will rotate to grade level specific topics (by student last name). Please report to the location designated by your student's grade and last initial at 6:30 pm.  We will make announcements after each session is complete to transition to the next grade level rotation. Students and siblings should remain with a parent or guardian for the duration of the event. A full schedule of events can be found on our website.

OMMS PTSA
At Back to School Night, our PTSA will have a table in the main hallway. Please stop by to consider becoming a member (there is a $10 membership fee) and learning more about how PTSA supports our school.   Also, please mark your calendars for Sept. 27th; PTSA is hosting a fundraiser at Chipotle and the proceeds will be used to support our positive behavior incentives and our school store! We appreciate all that our PTSA does to support OMMS!

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM THE FLU
Influenza, also known as the flu, is a serious illness that affects people of all ages.  One of the best ways to prevent the flu is through vaccinations.  We are pleased to again join with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention (MPP) to offer flu vaccinations at our school. New this year, you may give permission for your child to be vaccinated using (1) an online form at www.vaccineconsent.com. Please visit here for more information.

SIGN UP FOR A GT SEMINAR
Is your student hungry for more learning?  Encourage them to participate in a GT Seminar!
GT Seminars are "pullout" programs open to all students.  Some have a STEM or Humanities focus, others are a blend, but every seminar exercises research and production skills.  They're fantastic opportunities for students who are eager for connected ideas and a real audience, who are motivated to do extra projects, and who are self-driven to follow changing meeting times and to keep up with work missed in class.
Please talk with your student about the following opportunities.  Descriptions and further details are on the signup form.  Signups are due to Mr. Hobson by Weds 9/20.  Please contact Mr. Hobson with any questions!  michael_hobson@hcpss.org

GIRLS ON THE RUN/HEART & SOLE
Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, experiential learning program that combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. The lessons promote self-challenge instead of competition; self-worth instead of societal worth; and cooperation instead of rivalry. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running.
Heart & Sole is a new Middle School program that is designed specifically to focus on the complex needs of middle school girls in grades 6-8. Heart & Sole addresses the whole girl – body, brain, heart, spirit, and social connections – and creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, build self-esteem, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections, and develop life skills that will help them as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and beyond. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running. The girls will meet after-school twice a week for 10 weeks with the season ending 5k to be held on December 2nd in Howard County, MD. Oakland Mills Middle School will meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:40-4:00 starting the week of September 17th. Registration is open! Visit here  to register. Financial Assistance is available! Please contact Davia Williams (davia_williams@hcpss.org) for more details.

School Store Fundraiser at Chipotle
Help us improve the Falcon Nest – the new name for the School Store. As you know, teachers are able to award Falcon Dollars to reinforce positive behaviors exhibited by our students. The students are then able to spend those dollars at the school store. The OMMS PTSA has committed to providing $500 to purchase additional prizes for students this year. What can you do to help? Eat at Chipotle! On Wednesday, September 27, from 5 PM to 9 PM, mention the OMMS PTSA fundraiser at the Chipotle on 6181 Old Dobbin Road in Columbia, and 50% of your order will be donated back to the PTSA to help in our efforts to support the OMMS school store. It’s as easy as that! Want to help more? Tell your friends and family, too!

PTSA Nonevent Fundraiser
Did you know that last year the PTSA provided almost $1500 in field trip, field day, and 8th grade activity support to OMMS? We also supported cultural activities, such as the author event, and showed our teachers our appreciation through periodic hospitality events. We are only able to support the school, if we have the support of our wonderful families—you! We wish we could do all this without raising money, but that’s not possible, so we will be having fundraisers throughout the year (Mixed Bag, restaurant nights, etc.), but if you prefer 100% of your participation in a fundraiser be used for the school, please consider making a donation through the Nonevent Fundraiser. Forms were sent home with your students, but if you didn’t receive one, please email the VP of Fundraising at vpfund@ommsptsa.org. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you for your support!
